The Instructor Certification Examination (ICE) primarily serves as an opportunity to evaluate the Instructor Candidate for certification. Participation in this course does not guarantee certification. Candidates should arrive proficient in all skills on the appropriate ACA course outlines, before attending an ICE. Throughout the certification process, candidates will be instructed and evaluated and must be able to perform all of the related skills. For example a candidate, must correctly demonstrate, an ACA model of all required strokes correctly, to be considered at a passing level. * Technical Knowledge - General knowledge of the ACA, kayaking and the coastal environment. * Paddling Skills - Technical proficiency, including demonstration quality paddling skills and comfort, in a variety of conditions. * Teaching Ability Good physical modeling, displaying the ability to break down maneuvers and skills into their components. Presentations made in a clear, concise, organized manner, aimed at the beginner paddler. Good people skills and general professionalism In the category of Safety Awareness and Technical Rescue Skills, candidates must demonstrate 100% competency. Teaching Assignments: Each candidate will be assigned two 12-minute teaching topic to be presented during the ICE. This may include classroom, shore-side and on-water topics. These presentations should be concise talks, geared towards students of the appropriate level, in an ACA Quickstart , Introduction to Paddling Kayak , Basic Coastal Kayaking or Open Water. The challenge in your presentation will be to prioritize the information and present only that information that is necessary and relevant to your students. Talks will be stopped around the 12 minute mark so practice your talk in advance. In addition, each candidate will be assigned impromptu (3 to 5 minute) presentations, on basic topics, which should be familiar to all instructors (i.e. sizing PFD¹s) and various strokes, maneuvers and rescues, to present to the group. There are up to four Levels of Certification offered in these courses: Introduction to Kayaking , Essentials of Kayak Touring, Basic Coastal Kayaking, and Open Water Coastal Kayaking . This course will allow certification up to Basic Coastal Instructor. As an ACA Instructor, you may be certified to teach the ACA's Quickstart Your Kayak, Introduction to Paddling, Essentials of Kayk Touring, Basic Coastal Kayaking , and Open Water. Each of these levels builds on the previous one, so that the Open Water Coastal Kayaking instructors can automatically teach the Introduction course, but not vice-versa (please see attached Levels of Instructor Certification).
